GuideCharacter AI vs Janitor AI: Which One Fits How You Actually Chat?

Character AI is the easy, filtered, voice-enabled option. Janitor AI is the adult roleplay sandbox where you can plug in your own model. The decision starts with what you want to write, not with which app is bigger.

Character AI and Janitor AI get compared constantly, and most comparisons miss the point. These two platforms are not rivals chasing the same user. One is a polished consumer product with a strict filter and free voice calls. The other is an adult roleplay sandbox that lets you bring your own language model. Pick the wrong one and you will spend a week fighting a filter or setting up API keys.

So start with the content question, not the feature list. If you want explicit adult roleplay, Character AI will block you no matter what you pay. If you want to tap a button and hear a character talk back, Janitor AI has no voice calls at all. Everything else follows from there.

That table is the summary. The rest of this article is about why each row matters when you are the one typing.

What each platform actually is

Character AI was founded by two former Google engineers. The web beta arrived in September 2022, the apps in May 2023, and the audience has grown to roughly 20 million monthly active users on 2025 estimates. It is a mainstream product: millions of public characters, a smooth app, and a filter that keeps things family-friendly. In November 2025 the company ended open-ended chat for under-18 users.

Janitor AI is a different animal. JanitorAI Inc. was founded by Jan Zoltkowski in 2023; a June 2023 launch is widely reported but we have not confirmed the month. A May 2026 Forbes profile put it at about 2.5 million daily users, and company figures claim over 15 million sign-ups. It is built for adult roleplay, runs on a free in-house model by default, and lets you swap in a model from an outside provider if you want more control.

Characters and library

Character AI wins on raw volume. Its library runs into the millions, covering games, anime, history, original characters and a long tail of oddities. Search is decent and most popular characters have thousands of chats behind them, so you can usually find a version of whoever you have in mind.

Janitor AI lists about 1.4 million public characters according to its own help desk. Smaller, but not small. What matters more is what those characters are built for: longer scenarios, adult themes behind warning tags, and cards with heavier setup. If you want a slow-burn roleplay that runs for weeks, Janitor's library is shaped for that in a way Character AI's is not.

Creation and customization

Character AI gives you a guided editor. The Definition field caps at 32,000 characters and the greeting at 4,096, which is plenty for a normal character but not for a dense, novel-length persona. You can also pick a chat style: PipSqueak 2 is free, while DeepSqueak and LongSqueak sit behind a subscription.

Janitor AI is built for people who like writing character cards. Descriptions, personalities, scenarios and example dialogue go deep, and because you can attach an outside model, the ceiling on quality is set by whatever model you pay for. The trade-off is work. A good Janitor card takes an evening; a good Character AI character takes ten minutes.

Models and API setup

Character AI runs on its own models, and you have no say in which one answers. The company reportedly stopped training frontier models after its 2024 Google deal, and its models do change over time, which means a bot's personality can shift without warning.

Janitor AI defaults to JanitorLLM (JLLM), which is free and runs on roughly 8K to 9K tokens of context. If you want better prose, you connect a provider: pick a provider, enter a model name and an API key, and you are running on someone else's model, often through OpenRouter. That setup is fiddly the first time. It is also the only way to get frontier-model quality inside Janitor.

What the API really costs

Janitor does not bill you for tokens; your provider does. One reviewer reported heavy API use running about $10 to $30 a month. Without a spending cap on your provider account, that number climbs quietly. Set a limit before you start experimenting.

Memory

Memory is where both platforms get criticised, for different reasons.

Character AI gives free users 15 pins per chat. (c.ai) lite and c.ai+ get 30 pins plus stronger memory. There is a Lorebook and a memory bar, and users still report long chats drifting as the bot forgets earlier events. A 2026 claim about a feature called Story Memory does not appear in the help centre, so treat it as unconfirmed.

Janitor AI leans on context window instead. JLLM's 8K to 9K tokens is the hard ceiling on the free model; janitor+ raises context about fivefold. Beyond that, memory quality depends on the model you connect. Users have reported the default model feeling more repetitive after an April 2026 change, which is a good argument for trying an outside model if you plan to stay long-term. If memory is your main worry, our guide to what you get for the money breaks down how the paid tiers compare across apps.

Voice and mobile

Character AI offers voice free for all users, including two-way calls on app and web. Character Calls cover English, Spanish, Korean and Japanese. There is also image generation, Scenes, Stories and short AvatarFX videos. This is the single biggest practical gap between the two platforms.

Janitor AI is text first. No built-in voice calls, no video. The official app, listed as "Janitor: Interactive Stories" on the App Store and Google Play, covers the basics, but some features such as Router are web only. If you want to hear a character's voice, Character AI is the only one of the two that does it.

Content restrictions

Character AI bans sexually explicit content and graphic violence, and the filter is strict enough that it can interrupt non-explicit dark fiction. Paying does not help: c.ai+ does not loosen the content rules.

Janitor AI allows adult content on tagged characters for adults. It bans content involving characters coded as minors, restricts gore and sexual violence by its terms, and requires warning tags on dark themes. The age check is mostly a checkbox, with k-ID verification in Australia, Brazil and the UK. That is a real gap: the platform is adults-only by policy, and enforcement leans on self-declaration in most countries.

Neither platform is suitable for under-18 users. Character AI has ended open-ended chat for minors, and Janitor AI is adults only.

Pricing

Entry paid(c.ai) lite at $4.99/monthNone
Main subscriptionc.ai+ at $9.99/month or $94.99/yearjanitor+ at $12.99/month or $8.25/month billed yearly
Extra costsCharms for some extrasPay-per-token API or Router credits

A few things worth saying plainly. janitor+ launched on 24 June 2026 and adds more context, priority replies and extra swipes. It is the only Janitor subscription; claims elsewhere about a $19.99–$49.99 "Pro" tier do not match anything we can find. The same goes for a reported 50-messages-a-day cap on the free model, which does not fit the data.

On Character AI, the free tier is unlimited but shows ads and slows down at busy times. Charms cover some extras. c.ai+ at $9.99 a month is cheaper than janitor+, and the yearly price of $94.99 works out to roughly $7.92 a month.

Privacy and safety

Both platforms collect more than most users assume.

Character AI collects chat content, email, IP and device data, and voice recordings. Its privacy policy lists model training and sharing with ad partners. That is the cost of a free, ad-supported tier.

Janitor AI stores account details, characters, chats, IP and usage data. Its terms allow automatic scanning, and staff may review flagged content. There is no end-to-end encryption. If you connect an outside provider through the proxy, every message goes to that provider under its own terms. That is two companies reading your roleplay, not one.

Neither platform is a private diary. Write accordingly.

Interface and peak hours

Character AI's interface is the best in this comparison. The app is fast, the onboarding is obvious, and nothing requires a manual. The cost is the free-tier slow mode at busy times and the ads.

Janitor AI's default experience is simple enough: pick a bot, start chatting. The friction starts when you go deeper. Queues and downtime at busy hours are a common complaint, and the web interface is where the real controls live. If you mainly chat on a phone, expect a thinner feature set.

Who should pick which

Pick Character AI if you want to start chatting in under a minute, you like voice calls, you write fan fiction or original stories that stay within a PG-13 frame, or you want a polished app on your phone. The $9.99 subscription is easy to justify if you use it daily.

Pick Janitor AI if you are over 18 and adult content is part of what you want, you enjoy building detailed character cards, and you are willing to connect a model or accept the free one's limits. The setup cost is real but one-time, and the ceiling is higher.

Pick neither if you are under 18. Character AI has closed open-ended chat for minors and Janitor AI is adults only.

Some users run both: Character AI for quick, safe chats and voice, Janitor for longer adult stories. That is a reasonable split, and it costs nothing until you subscribe to either.

Can you move characters between them?

There is no official character transfer from Character AI to Janitor AI. If you have a Character AI persona you want to keep, you rebuild the card in Janitor using your own notes on personality, scenario and example dialogue. The chat history does not come with you, and the new version will sound different because a different model is writing it.

Alternatives worth knowing

If neither fits, a few companion apps sit in different niches. Candy.ai starts at $3.99 a month with annual billing, but free accounts get roughly five messages, so it is a paid product in practice. Our Candy.ai review covers the token bills behind the pictures.

Secrets AI starts at $9.17 a month on yearly billing; the free plan stops at 20 messages a day. OurDream AI is $9.99 a month paid yearly, and unpaid replies cost coins. CrushOn AI plans start at $5.99 a month with adult content on paid tiers, and Chai runs ads on its free version with a $13.99 monthly tier.

Each of those is a companion app, not a roleplay engine. If long-form writing is the goal, Character AI and Janitor AI remain the closer pair.

Bottom line

Character AI is easier, safer and more polished. Free voice, a library in the millions, and a $9.99 subscription that is genuinely good value. It will not do adult roleplay, and the filter will occasionally interrupt dark fiction that is not explicit at all.

Janitor AI gives you adult freedom, deeper character cards and control over the model. You pay for that with setup time, queues, a weaker default model and an age check that is mostly a checkbox.

Decide your content boundaries first. Then choose between convenience and control. That is the whole decision.

Frequently asked questions

For adult roleplay and model choice, yes. For ease of use, voice calls and a filtered, family-friendly space, Character AI is ahead. Your content boundaries decide it before any feature does.

Both have free tiers. Janitor's free JLLM can queue at busy times, while Character AI's free tier shows ads and slows down at peak hours. Paid plans start at $9.99 a month for c.ai+ and $12.99 a month for janitor+.

Not the same one. Character AI blocks sexual content at every tier, including c.ai+. Janitor AI allows adult content on tagged characters for adults, bans content involving characters coded as minors, and restricts gore and sexual violence under its terms.

No, there is no official transfer. You recreate the card in Janitor using your own notes on personality, scenario and example dialogue. The chat history stays behind, and the new version will sound different because a different model writes it.
