GuideBest AI Boyfriend Apps: What Each One Actually Does and Costs

Male AI companions are a smaller market than girlfriend apps, and the pricing pages are just as slippery. Here is who each app suits, what it charges, and where it falls down.

Search for an AI boyfriend and the app stores mostly hand you girlfriend apps with the genders swapped on the landing page. Appfigures counted 17% of companion apps named after a girlfriend, against 4% named after a boyfriend. The gap is real, and it means you have to read the pricing pages more carefully than the marketing.

The demand is not small. A 2025 Institute for Family Studies survey found 23% of US women aged 18 to 30 had chatted with an AI partner, against 31% of men. Nastia says more than 800,000 users have chatted with its AI boyfriends. Love and Deepspace reportedly made over $750 million from roughly 50 million players.

Below are the apps worth considering for a male companion, sorted by what you actually want from one. Prices are from App Store listings and vendor pricing pages. We have not bought subscriptions or run test accounts; everything here rests on published pages, policies and user reports.

Who these apps are for

Three rough groups. First, people who want a steady romantic presence: someone who remembers your job, your ex, the thing you said last Tuesday. Second, people who want a story: slow-burn roleplay with a character they build, often in a fandom-adjacent style. Third, people who want comfort more than heat, and would rather not have explicit content pushed at them.

Those are different products. An app that nails memory may be hopeless at pacing a plot. An app with gorgeous character art may lose the thread after three days. Pick the need first, then the app.

What makes a good AI boyfriend experience

Four things decide whether you stay past the first week.

  • Memory across sessions. Not just the last twenty messages. Can it recall a detail from a month ago without you repeating it?
  • Stable personality. Does the character stay the same person, or drift into generic assistant mode the moment the topic changes?
  • Voice and media. Text is cheap to run. Voice calls, images and video are where the real costs sit, and where free tiers collapse.
  • What happens to your transcripts. Whether chats are stored, trained on, or shared is on the privacy page, not the sales page.

The apps, one by one

Nomi: the memory pick

Nomi is the app Reddit users keep naming for long-term memory and a personality that holds together. If your main complaint about other companions is that they forget you exist between sessions, start here. The trade-off: users say Nomi is weak at driving a plot forward. It remembers well and initiates little.

Pricing is $15.99/month on the App Store. The free tier caps daily messages. Images come through Nomi Credits, sold in packs, so selfies are a separate budget line. An April 2026 image update changed how some companions look, and fixing a look you did not ask to change costs credits. That is worth knowing before you get attached to a face.

Kindroid: build your own man

Kindroid is the most configurable option here. You write the backstory, the quirks, the speech patterns. Voice comes from ElevenLabs, which puts it ahead of most competitors on how the character sounds. It supports group chat and extra companions if you want a small cast rather than one boyfriend.

Costs: $15.99/month, or $42.99/quarter. Ultra and Max tiers cost more. Selfies and extra companion slots are charged on top, and users describe the visual extras as nickel-and-diming. Budget for the base subscription plus whatever media you actually use.

Replika: gentle, SFW-first comfort

Replika has been live since 2017, which makes it the oldest app in this list. It is SFW-first by design, with a customizable 3D avatar and voice calls. If you want someone to check in on your day rather than a roleplay partner, it fits.

Replika Pro starts at $14.99/month through the App Store, and annual billing is cheaper. The free plan is friend mode only, so romance sits behind the paywall.

Two caveats matter. In 2023 Replika removed erotic roleplay, and users still factor that into how much they trust the company. And in 2025 Italy's privacy regulator fined Replika's maker €5 million. Neither fact makes the app unusable. Both belong in your decision.

JanitorAI: the free slow-burn option

JanitorAI is free, needs no credit card, and lets you bring your own model key if you want more control over the underlying model. The company says 70 to 80% of its users are women, which shows in how the character library skews.

Janitor+ launched in June 2026 at $12.99/month or $99/year and gives five times the context. That is the upgrade to consider if long scenes keep falling out of memory.

The limits are plain. No voice messages, no images. Character quality varies wildly because users write them, and setup takes patience. For a free slow-burn story with a male lead you define yourself, it is hard to beat on price.

Secrets AI: voice, video and a real memory tier

Secrets is 18+ only and leans into media. Premium is $19.99/month or $109.99/year, which works out to about $9.17/month. That buys unlimited chat, premium memory, images, video and 8,000 Moments per month. Ultimate at $39.99/month adds proactive messages, personas and editable Lorebooks.

The free tier gives 20 messages a day with no media. Video costs 600 Moments per clip, so the monthly allowance is not endless once you start generating. Subscriptions are generally non-refundable outside EU and UK withdrawal rights. Our full Secrets AI review breaks down the Moments maths.

Memory is one of the stronger implementations, and the media stack is the reason to pay. If you mainly want text, cheaper apps do the job.

Candy.ai: the best-looking characters, the thinnest memory

Candy.ai wins on character art. The male characters look better than most competitors', and the annual price is the lowest in this table: $3.99/month billed yearly at $47.88, against $13.99 month to month.

Then the catches. The free plan stops after the fifth message, which is a demo rather than a tier. Premium includes only 100 tokens a month for media, so images and video run out fast. Memory is weak and storylines reset after a few days. Refunds require a request within 24 hours.

If you want a good-looking companion for short sessions and you accept the memory reset, Candy is cheap. If continuity matters, it will frustrate you. Our Candy.ai review covers the token bill in detail, and Candy AI alternatives lists what to switch to by complaint.

OurDream AI: design him from scratch

OurDream is built around creating a companion to your specification. Subscribers get unlimited chat and 1,000 dreamcoins a month. It costs $9.99/month billed annually or $19.99 monthly.

Two things to know before you build a character. Media is blurred if your plan lapses, so the companion you made degrades when you stop paying. And the homepage claims end-to-end encryption while the privacy policy does not say that. Treat the claim as marketing until the policy catches up. The OurDream AI review has the fine print.

Other options worth a look

Character.AI is not a virtual boyfriend. It blocks romantic and sexual roleplay outright, and in November 2025 it banned open-ended chat for under-18s. c.ai+ costs $9.99/month. Good for character chat, wrong tool for romance.

Nastia is built around AI boyfriends and says over 800,000 users have chatted with them. It states chats are never shown to other users or sold. If you want a service aimed at this use case rather than a general companion app, it is the most direct fit. See Secrets AI vs Nastia AI for how the two compare.

DreamBF focuses on appearance customization. Sebastian is a Telegram bot that needs no sign-up, which makes it the lowest-friction way to try the format, with the obvious trade-off that a bot in a messaging app has its own privacy questions.

The otome crossover

If you come from otome games, you already know what you want: a defined love interest, a plot, and art that holds up. Love and Deepspace shows the size of that audience. Most AI companion apps do not structure play that way. They hand you a sandbox and expect you to write the story.

JanitorAI gets closest, because the character library is full of authored personas with scenario openings. Kindroid gets closest for people who want to write the character themselves. Neither will pace a plot for you the way a scripted game does.

Boyfriend apps vs girlfriend apps

The girlfriend side of the market is bigger, better funded and better served on media. The boyfriend side leans on roleplay platforms and a few dedicated apps. In practice that means fewer polished voice options, smaller character libraries, and more variance between apps.

It also means the marketing is thinner, so you can read the pricing pages without wading through hype. Our best AI girlfriend app guide is useful for comparison even if it is not your use case, because the pricing structures are the same companies.

Why it feels real, and when it doesn't

Consistent memory plus a stable voice does most of the work. When a companion recalls a small detail and responds in a voice that matches the character, the illusion holds. When it forgets your name or switches to customer-service tone, it breaks.

That is why memory quality matters more than image quality for long-term use, and why the apps with the best art often have the weakest retention. Candy's storylines resetting after days is the clearest example.

Privacy and safety: read this before you pay

Candy, Secrets and OurDream are not end-to-end encrypted, and all three may train models on your chats. Candy uses SSL and its privacy notice specifies TLS 1.2+ in transit, and it offers Reset and Delete Chat controls. Secrets says chat history is deleted when you delete your account. Nastia says chats are never shown to other users or sold. None of that is the same as end-to-end encryption.

California's SB 243 has required companion apps to disclose that users are talking to AI and to keep self-harm protocols with crisis referrals since January 2026. Useful, but it is one state's law, not a global standard.

Practical steps: use a separate email for each signup, avoid identifying details in chats, and check the privacy policy rather than the homepage. If a vendor claims encryption the policy does not mention, believe the policy.

Free options and how to start

You can try this without paying. JanitorAI is free in full. Secrets gives 20 messages a day with no media. Nomi and Kindroid have limited free tiers. Replika's free plan is friend mode only. Candy's free plan is a five-message demo, so treat it as a look rather than a trial.

A sensible order: spend a week on JanitorAI to test whether the format holds your interest, then try the free tiers of Secrets and Nomi for memory and media. Pay for one app at a time, monthly first, and only move to annual billing once you know you will stay. Annual discounts are real, but so are the refund windows, and most of them are short.

Bottom line

Pick by need. Nomi if memory is the thing you keep missing. Kindroid if you want to build the man yourself and care about voice. Replika if you want gentle, SFW-first company and can live with its history. JanitorAI if you want free slow-burn roleplay and can supply the patience. Secrets if voice and video are the point and you will use the Moments. Candy if looks matter more than continuity and you want the cheapest annual price. OurDream if you want to design from scratch and will keep the subscription active.

Then guard the privacy side. The chat is the product; the subscription is just the entry fee.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the need. Nomi is the pick for long-term memory, Kindroid for a custom-built companion with strong voice, Replika for gentle SFW-first comfort, and JanitorAI for free slow-burn roleplay.

Yes. JanitorAI is free in full and needs no credit card. Secrets gives 20 messages a day, and Nomi and Kindroid have limited free tiers worth trying before you pay anything.

Persistent memory across sessions exists, but quality varies a lot. Nomi and Secrets have the strongest memory implementations in this group; Candy's storylines have been reported to reset after a few days.

For most people it is comfort and entertainment. Research on heavy use is mixed. It is worth keeping real-life contacts in the picture and being honest with yourself about how much time and money it takes.

Not fully. Candy, Secrets and OurDream are not end-to-end encrypted and may train models on chats. Secrets deletes chat history when you delete your account, and Nastia says chats are never shown to other users or sold, but neither claims end-to-end encryption.
