GuideJoyland AI Alternatives: Pick by the Reason You're Leaving

Most people don't leave Joyland AI over one thing. They leave because of credits, a moderation block, a companion who forgets their name, or a privacy page that says nothing. Here is how to match the replacement to the complaint.

Joyland AI is not broken. Free users get 10 credits a day, and third-party pricing pages put Standard at $9.99/month for 5,000 credits and Premium at $19.99/month with no credit cap. For anime-style character browsing, that is enough to keep a lot of adults poking around.

What pushes people out is more specific. Some comparison sites claim a library of 60,000+ anime characters; we could not confirm that number. What we can confirm is the pattern in user complaints: moderation that interrupts harmless conversations, characters who forget details in longer chats, a privacy page that says little about how conversations are stored or used, and at least one user report of being charged after cancelling.

So this guide does not crown a single winner. It sorts twelve alternatives by the reason you are leaving, because an app that fixes your credit complaint may do nothing for your memory complaint. Prices below are US list prices from vendor pages and third-party listings as of October 2026. They change. Check at checkout.

Why users leave Joyland

Four complaints come up again and again, and they are not equally fixable.

Credits. A daily allowance sounds generous until you are mid-scene and the meter stops you. Premium removes the cap at $19.99/month, which is more than several competitors charge for their top tiers. If the meter is your problem, you want unlimited text, not a bigger bucket.

Moderation. Joyland allows NSFW for adults, but the exact paywalled parts are unclear from public pages, and users report blocks on conversations that were not explicit. A platform with a clearer content switch is less frustrating than one that guesses.

Memory. Reviewers report characters forgetting details in longer chats. This is the hardest complaint to fix by switching, because most library-based apps keep a short context window unless you pay for more.

Privacy. Joyland publishes little on how conversations are stored and used. If you have ever typed something into a chat box that you would not want in a database, that silence matters more than the character art.

One more signal, not a verdict: third-party traffic data estimated Joyland's organic search traffic was down roughly 50% year over year by September 2026. We found no sign the platform is shutting down. It is still running.

How we picked

We did not test these apps hands-on, and we do not run paid subscriptions to them for review purposes. The list is built from published pricing pages, terms and privacy policies, and user reports from review sites and forums. No platform paid for placement here, and the list contains no affiliate links.

We filtered for apps an adult Joyland user could actually move to: accessible in the US, with a working free tier or a clear low entry price, and with enough public information to describe what you get. We dropped apps with no pricing or privacy information we could verify.

Features to compare before you switch

Four features decide whether a Joyland replacement feels like an upgrade or a lateral move.

Library size and character quality. Joyland's draw is browsing anime characters. SpicyChat, Character AI, PolyBuzz and CrushOn AI compete on the same ground. Nomi, Kindroid and Secrets AI do not, and that is deliberate.

Memory. Ask how long a chat can run before the bot loses your name. Free tiers usually keep the shortest window.

Media. Text-only apps are cheap to run and cheap to price. Voice, images and video cost the platform money, and that cost lands on you as tokens, credits or Moments.

Moderation and content settings. A toggle you control beats a filter that decides for you.

The twelve alternatives, by complaint

If you want the closest swap: SpicyChat

SpicyChat is the nearest thing to Joyland with fewer walls. Big anime library, an adult toggle, and fewer hard blocks than Joyland, though it still has rules. Paid plans went up on September 8, 2026, and now run $5.95, $19.95 and $29.95 a month. The $5.95 tier is the cheapest serious entry on this list.

On library size the numbers disagree. SpicyChat's own guides claim 200,000+ characters, the company says millions, and our own count sits around 138,000. Treat all three as claims rather than facts. What matters is whether the characters you want exist.

Watch out: the free tier has a queue at busy times and limited memory, there is no iOS app, and Android requires a direct download.

If you want free: Janitor AI

Janitor AI is free across the whole platform, including its own JanitorLLM model, and you can plug in your own API key if you want a better model. Janitor+ at $12.99/month, or $8.25/month billed yearly, adds 5x context, 300 enhanced swipes a month and priority messages.

The catch is scope: text only, no voice and no image generation. The free model can also repeat itself in long chats. For pure text roleplay with no bill, nothing here beats it.

If moderation is the complaint: CrushOn AI

CrushOn AI splits content into Filtered, Unfiltered and Hidden Content. Hidden Content needs a registered account, days of check-ins and spent credits, so the most permissive setting is earned rather than switched on. Some users in certain regions report a small card charge for age verification.

Pricing is a long ladder: a free plan with 100 message credits a month, Standard from $5.99/month, Premium at $14.99, and tiers above $89. Free accounts lose chat history after a week of inactivity, and CrushOn held a Trustpilot rating of 1.8 across 22 reviews in October 2026. Small sample, ugly number.

If the companion forgets you: Nomi AI

Nomi AI is built around memory, with short, medium and long-term layers. You set the relationship as friend, romantic partner or mentor. Explicit text is allowed for adults; nude images are not.

App Store pricing is $15.99 monthly, $39.99 quarterly or $99.99 yearly. The free tier has limited messages and image credits cost extra. Some users disliked changes in Nomi's 2026 image update, which is a reminder that an app you like today can change under you. If memory is the whole reason you are switching, read our Secrets AI vs Candy AI comparison before you commit.

If you want memory plus voice and selfies: Kindroid

Kindroid layers memory and keeps a journal of key memories. It offers selfies, voice calls, voice cloning and group chats. That is a fuller package than most.

It is also the least free option here. The free Lite tier was retired on October 1, 2026. Newcomers get a single trial of roughly 50 messages, then read-only access. Standard is $15.99/month on the App Store, Ultra and MAX add-ons cost more, and calls burn audio credits on top.

If you want one companion done well: Secrets AI

Secrets AI rates strongest on memory among the big adult companion apps, and its privacy setup is unusually clear: stored data is encrypted, deleting your account wipes your chats, and call audio is not kept. Chats are not end-to-end encrypted, so the company can still read them.

The free tier gives 20 messages a day with no media. Premium is $19.99 monthly or roughly $9.17/month billed yearly, and includes 8,000 Moments a month for images, video and calls. Video costs 600 Moments per clip. Group chat and personas need the $39.99 Ultimate tier. Our Secrets AI review goes through the Moment maths in detail.

If you want pictures: Candy AI

Candy.ai earns its place on image quality. The annual plan is $3.99/month billed $47.88; monthly is $13.99. Premium includes unlimited text and 100 tokens a month for media.

Two warnings. The free tier is five messages, total. And testers report storylines resetting after a couple of days, so the pictures are better than the continuity. Our Candy.ai review covers where the tokens actually go.

If you want unlimited chat plus media: OurDream AI

OurDream AI sells unlimited chats with coins for media. Yearly is $9.99/month and includes 1,000 dreamcoins a month, which works out to roughly 200 images. Month-to-month is $19.99. Videos run up to 60 seconds. Free users pay one dreamcoin per message and get no media generation.

The fine print is real. Media is blurred when your subscription ends, memory leans on recent history, the interface is English only, and the privacy policy does not back up the encryption claim on the marketing page. Our OurDream AI review lays out the Dreamcoin maths.

If you want emotional support, not anime: Replika

Replika Pro is $14.99/month or about $5.83/month billed yearly. The free tier covers basic friend chat; Pro adds romance, calls and selfies. Adult content is heavily limited and users report memory gaps. After the 2026 rebuild, some long-time users said their companion felt different. That is the risk with any app that rewrites its model.

If you want SFW only: Character AI

Character AI reports over 20 million characters and over 100 million users; our market data puts monthly users at roughly 20 million. Chat is free with ads, and c.ai+ is $9.99/month.

There is no NSFW, and filters are strict. Open-ended chat has been closed to minors since November 2025, and some adults report being caught by age checks. If you are leaving Joyland for moderation reasons, this is the wrong direction.

If you want looser filters on mobile: Chai

Chai is 18+ and filters more loosely than Joyland. Free use is ad-supported, with reviewers reporting around 70 messages a day. Premium is $13.99/month and Ultra is $29.99. Long replies and the better models sit behind the higher tier, and community bots are uneven.

If you want full control: SillyTavern

SillyTavern is a free, open-source interface. You connect a model or run one locally. With a local model, nothing leaves your computer, which is the strongest privacy answer on this list.

It is also the most work. Setup takes time, and quality and cost depend entirely on the model you attach. This is for people who enjoy tinkering, not people who want an app.

Other apps worth knowing

Talkie AI has voice chat and character cards, and bans explicit content. Talkie+ is $9.99/month.

PolyBuzz says it has more than 20 million user-generated characters and filters adult content.

Muah AI combines text, image generation and voice with NSFW, from $19.99/month. A 2024 breach leaked roughly 1.9 million email addresses and prompts, so use a throwaway email if you try it.

AI Dungeon is story-first, built on branching narratives rather than companions.

Dippy AI appears on lists, but we found no pricing or privacy data worth trusting. Test it with nothing personal.

Wellness and business options

Not every Joyland user wants a girlfriend bot. Wysa uses cognitive behavioural therapy techniques and is a self-help tool, not a companion. Elomia focuses on anxiety, depression and emotional validation. Reflection AI tailors conversations to your input and tone. None of these are substitutes for a person or a clinician.

On the business side, Scrile AI builds branded white-label companion platforms. That is infrastructure, not something you sign up for as a user.

Voice, images and memory: what you actually get

Joyland is text-first, and public pages do not confirm voice support. If voice is why you are leaving, the shortlist is Secrets AI, Nomi AI, Kindroid, Replika and Talkie AI. Kindroid's calls use audio credits, so check the allowance.

For images, Candy AI leads on photorealism, OurDream AI bundles roughly 200 images a month into its yearly plan, Secrets AI folds images into Moments, and Kindroid does selfies. All of them meter media somehow.

For memory, Secrets AI, Nomi AI and Kindroid are built around it. Library platforms like SpicyChat and CrushOn AI keep a shorter window unless you pay for context.

Which pick fits

  • Credits ran out: Janitor AI for free text, OurDream AI for unlimited chat with media.
  • Moderation blocked you: SpicyChat or CrushOn AI, with the content switch up front.
  • Your companion forgot you: Secrets AI, Nomi AI or Kindroid.
  • Privacy worries: Secrets AI for a clear policy, SillyTavern with a local model for none at all.
  • You want better pictures: Candy AI or OurDream AI.
  • You want free and SFW: Character AI.

If you are still weighing the big adult apps against each other, our best AI girlfriend app guide ranks them by what you get for the money, and the reviews hub lists every app we have scored with its costs.

Privacy and safety, in plain terms

Most companion apps store chats on their servers. Few use end-to-end encryption. Some train models on de-identified chats. Read the privacy policy before you type anything identifying, and assume anything you write could be read by staff or used to improve a model unless the policy says otherwise.

Credit systems are designed to keep you buying. Watch your time and your spending, not just your balance. If you cancel, do it through the same method you paid with and keep a screenshot, because at least one Joyland user reported being charged after cancelling.

Finally, test free tiers first. A week on a free plan tells you more about memory and moderation than any comparison table.

Frequently asked questions

SpicyChat suits most people leaving Joyland: it keeps the anime library, filters less and has paid plans from $5.95/month. If you want completely free text roleplay, Janitor AI runs the whole platform without a bill.

Yes. Janitor AI is free for text roleplay, and Character AI is free with ads. SpicyChat, CrushOn AI and Secrets AI all have limited free tiers, though SpicyChat queues at busy times and Secrets AI gives 20 messages a day with no media.

For age-verified adults, SpicyChat, Janitor AI, CrushOn AI, Kindroid, Secrets AI, Candy AI and OurDream AI allow it. Nomi AI permits explicit text but no nude images. Character AI, Talkie AI and PolyBuzz disallow it.

Secrets AI, Nomi AI and Kindroid are built around long-term memory, with layered systems and, in Kindroid's case, a journal of key memories. Library platforms keep a shorter context window unless you pay for more.

We found no sign of that, and the platform is still running. Third-party traffic data did estimate its organic search traffic down about 50% year over year by September 2026, which suggests fewer new users rather than a closure.
